When I first came to London, I was amazed that Londoners were drinking in the afternoon–at 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm. They stood on the pavement outside the pubs, blocking pedestrians, a beer in a hand, talking, drinking, laughing.
Actually, Singaporeans drink in the afternoon as well.
I was at Chong Pang today and it was about 4pm. At the coffee shop near the main road, there were a few uncles seated around tables, empty beer bottles sitting in the middle. There they sat in the coffee shop, drinking beer, talking, eating peanuts (that’s what Singaporeans do when the drink–eat peanuts).
What was really heartening was that it was a table of mixed races. One Indian and three Chinese uncles. All men.
Perhaps it is the same all over the world. Men have the ability to consume alcohol (beer) as early as in the afternoon.
